About 11 years ago, I remember randomly feeling a lump in my breast. It was small but it scared me so much to think of it so I ignored it for at least about 6-8 months until I started feeling it while Slept and changed my clothes. In spite of my fear I knew it was time to have it checked out. And Alhamdulillah I can’t be more grateful that it was only a benign lump, but since it was growing rapidly in size, it did need to be removed via surgery to avoid any complications.
Nonetheless, that experience itself was scary and stressful to say the least, because who knows what it could have been…till date, I regularly check for lumps in my breasts
My purpose of sharing this story is to raise awareness, to encourage every single one of you to be aware of your bodies and the changes, to religiously do monthly self-breast examinations (google on how to, if you don’t know)
Remember that, Although breast cancer in young adults is not as common, there is a large number that is diagnosed under age 40 and it is more aggressive in young adults.
The good news is that early detection saves lives. And statistics show that death rates from breast cancer have been declining since about 1990, in part due to better screening and early detection, increased awareness, and continually improving treatment options. By- Zahra
